In the words of John Worontschak our winemaker, this wine is made with the finest grapes for Pinot Noir he has seen in 40 years of winemaking. It is a testament to the fastidious pursuit of excellence that typified Roy, our founder.

Set on 30 acres of south and west facing slopes Martin’s Lane Vineyard commands spectacular views across the upper reaches of the River Crouch estuary in this warmest and driest corner of the country.
The vineyard’s beautiful hillside location situated within a designated Special Landscape area occupies a site creating all the conditions necessary for the production of the very finest quality grapes.
Its river location offers a perfect temperate climate and the tides provide the vital spring frost protection essential to the full development and ripening of the premium grape varieties grown so successfully on this site with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris all showing outstanding results.
A full range of single estate wines from the vineyard is now available under the Martin’s Lane own trademark and brand.
It is with enormous sadness & heavy hearts that we announce the very sudden passing of Roy Martin of Martin’s Lane Vineyard on Friday 16th June.
Roy was the founding partner of Martin’s Lane - in 2008 he had the vision & foresight to gather together a group of like-minded family & friends to start a small vineyard & trial the growing of grapes for sparkling wine. Little did he know at the time that the vineyard would become a key producer of high-quality fruit for the production of still wines.
Roy was at the forefront of promoting quality in both the growing of grapes for sale to many wineries across England & in the production of our own label single estate wines. He was also the driving force behind the development of The Crouch Valley as a significant wine area. He decided that our wines should bear the name of Crouch Valley & we adopted its use on our own bottles in 2013. He was a gracious, optimistic man with a vast intellect & a real enjoyment of life.
Although self-taught, his knowledge of wine & viniculture was extensive & he was quite comfortable in the company of experts. Roy was an honourable businessman & dealt with customers & suppliers in a fair & equitable manner. He was a man who had accomplished so much & yet had so much more he wanted to do. The vineyard was just one of his passions - horse racing was another great passion & he could often be found recalling specific races, horses & dates with ease. He also had a keen interest in trains, his father having been a lifelong railwayman.
When not occupied with the vineyard, Roy loved spending as much spare time as possible with his family - his wife Sandra, their two children & the grandchildren as well as the extended family of in-laws. He will be hugely missed by them all & of course, by us, the vineyard families. He was a pioneer in the evolution of the English wine industry & leaves a lasting legacy. The Crouch Valley is now widely considered to be the emerging area for growing top quality grapes for English still wines.
